New Monkey Species Discovered in Africa

For the first time in almost 30 years, a new species of monkey has been discovered, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa. It’s not Bigfoot or the Yeti, but any primate discovery is huge news, and just further proves that there are still many large species out there that we haven’t discovered yet. This story has been big news today, and it looks like our friends over at Sportsmasher have beaten me to the “hilarious photo” punch on this story. So of course we had to use this one as our source.

The Guardian A new species of monkey has been identified in Africa, only the second time such a discovery has been made on the continent in 28 years.The identification of the monkey in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is significant, as identification of mammals new to science is rare. Lesula (Cercopithecus lomamiensis) has a naked face and a mane of long blond hairs, and is described by the researchers who identified it as shy and quiet. It lives on the ground and in trees in a 6,500 square mile habitat of the lowland rainforests in the centre of the DRC between the middle Lomami (the inspiration for its name) and the upper Tshuapa Rivers. Itsdiet is mostly fruit and vegetation.

This is, without a doubt, the creepiest monkey that I’ve ever seen. I had to study it to make sure it wasn’t computer generated, it seriously looks like a product of genetic engineering, half human half ape.

I can’t take credit for this, I was trying to think of who the hell this monkey looked most like on this slightly hungover uncreative Friday afternoon when I saw this, and I had to steal it because I cannot do any better right now.
