Irresponsible Ghost Hunting Blogging

I stumbled upon this post this morning, from a blog called Reviews of Electronics. And while I appreciate this person putting a list together of ghost hunting equipment that can be given as gifts for the holidays, one sentence in particular bothered me about this post, as it is completely untrue. Can you guess which one?

ghost hunters, paranormal activity, evidence for ghosts
If we really had indisputable proof of ghosts, we wouldn’t have to suffer the antics of dozens of stupid ghost hunters on dozens of stupid ghost hunting shows…

The paranormal, supernatural, science fiction, regardless of what you call it, we’re all intrigued by it.  While there are some who want nothing to do with it, there is a huge sector of the population who are more than intrigued by the paranormal, and actively keep up with the news, happenings and developments in the area of paranormal studies and activity, and/or become involved as a spectator by watching television shows and movies related to paranormal, supernatural, or science fiction events.  Of those who enjoy being a spectator of the sport so to speak, there is another group of individuals who want to be more involved, and decide to participate in this realm as paranormal investigators or ghost hunters.  These are people who investigate suspected paranormal activity, exactly like the individuals do in Ghost Hunter episodes.

This growing interest among consumers world wide has gained enough momentum to spark an entire multi million dollar industry of Ghost Hunting Equipment.  The services of a ghost hunting team may be more popular than you realize.  More and more people are buying in to the presence of the supernatural, and with the advanced detection tools and equipment that are being used by ghost hunting teams, enough indisputable evidence has been presented to indicate that a supernatural world exists, and that entities other than humans occupy the world as well, bringing legitimacy to the field.  Ghost hunting equipment is actually easy to find and not really that expensive, making it a unique and exciting Christmas gift option for the science fiction lover on your list.

It does not require a college degree or certification of any kind to get involved in ghost hunting or paranormal investigation.  It simply requires a curiosity, a little courage, and maybe some cool ghost hunting gadgets to get you started.  There are actually ghost hunter groups, forums, and societies all over the world where you can get involved with exciting and possibly blood curdling paranormal activity.  So whether you are the ghost buster of the hour, or someone on your shopping list is, you’ll want to check out these superb ghost hunting tools of the trade, and as Mulder would say…..just believe!!

So she thinks that there is “indisputable evidence” for the existence of the paranormal? If that were the case, there’d be no need for ghost hunting groups. If there was indisputable evidence, there would be no need for skeptics, and there’d be no need for anyone to research or hunt for paranormal activity. How many “dog hunting” groups are out there? How many “gravity hunting” shows are on TV? None, of course. The thrill is in the hunt. I’m sure (or rather, I’m hoping) this author just meant that there is a lot of evidence out there that is interesting enough to suggest the possibility of the paranormal. But it misleads those who believe orbs are the ghost of grandma to believe that there is actually proof of ghosts, when all we have are some interesting, anomalous findings.

  • LOL! Good post, Jason! The wording is troublesome…and this post you referenced isn’t the 1st time I’ve seen something like that. But I never thought about putting it together the way you did. Nice job!

    • Thanks Court! It just drives me nuts when people say stuff like this. It’s very misleading, and makes people think that if they buy an EMF meter that it will be a “ghost detector.”

  • I was more concerned that this article dumbs paranormal investigation down. Like… “Y’all come on out and be investigators… It don’t take no training or smarts.” Ugh! 🙂

  • No matter how you feel about orbs, I have a funny story. When I went on a paranormal investigation hosted by a Salem ghost tour in this old bank attached to smuggling tunnels in Salem, Ma we took this photo. The woman who was the most scared of the ghosts had 12 orbs circling around her. The other women who had their pictures taken in the same place before and after her had none. We also had some good EVPs that night. The ghost was a wise ass. When asked if she was afraid she answered no, scared.
